The Style Workshop
I feel it is important not to get hung up on any one style for too long, even my own style. Whenever I see a style I like I try to learn it and then later I may incorporate elements from different styles to create my own style. The purpose of this "workshop" is to introduce you to some styles and hopefully get you to keep looking for more styles and create your own. If you would like to submit styles or additions to styles already here please e-mail me.
This is how I learn new styles:
- Find reference pictures that show the style and/or elements to want to draw. You can look for ideas in books (sometimes even how to draw books), online, by pausing a movie (DVDs work great for this!), photos, or looking at real life.
- Make some sketches from the references. Please note that trying to copy another artist's pictures (not TRACE) will allow you to see some of the details specific to the style, but it is not for everyone (each person learns in their own way) AND you should always list the copy as a copy/fanart with credit to the original artist! Some artists do not "allow" or like fanart, so you should always try to find out first.
- Take note of the details that make a style unique. You can do this in your head or on paper. Many of my sketchbooks have pages where I've made notes of specific elements I like in styles - such as sketches of clock faces I've seen in stores.
